LITEIN, KENYA - Hospice Program 2005- 2006

Litein Hospital 2005-2006
In October 2006, volunteers, Cathie Garratt, Jeff Rolheiser from Calgary, Alberta and Rosemary Nash from Vancouver, British Columbia, joined Mary Tidlund and visited the Litein Hospital. Cathie, Jeff and Mary are steering committee members of Hold Me Africa, (www.Holdmeafrica.org) a partnership between the Salvation Army Agape Hospice and the Tidlund Foundation to create a hospice program in this rural community. After meetings with the directors of the hospital, Cathie Garratt elected to volunteer with the palliative care team in Kenya for 3 years. Cathy has now moved there and her husband Reg Garratt will join her as a volunteer in the summer.

A follow up trip was planned and on Feb 2006, volunteers Dr. David Falk, Dawn Falk, Peta Collings, Cathie and Reg Garratt, Jeff Rolheiser, Douglas McLaughlin, June Raymond, Matt Palmer, and Dave Horrocks from Calgary, Alberta and Susan Breiddal from Victoria, British Columbia joined with the AIC Hospital staff in Litein to develop their hospice program with the teaching support of the African Palliative Care Association.

Jeff Rolheiser also donated 45 soccer balls through out our stops in Kenya. Cathie Garratt donated medical supplies to the hospitals that were greatly appreciated.
