HUAMBO, ANGOLA— Biosand Water Filtration 2005-2006

In October 2005, Calgary volunteer Cathie Garratt accompanied Mary Tidlund to Angola to visit our partner Development Workshop in Huambo, Angola. The new program in Angola for 2005 was the Huambo Biosand Water Filtration Project where Development Workshop will be teaching participants about constructing water filters. In September 2005 Tal Woolsley and Bryan Fofonoff from Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) in Calgary were contracted by the Tidlund Foundation to travel and train 23 Huambo staff and stakeholders to build the water filters. The funders for the program were intiated by Ann Rooney from the Calgary South Rotary Club. The funders are Rotary International, the Calgary South Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Luanda, Angola and the Tidlund Foundation. In total $90,000 funded this program which will produce 300 filters by September 2006. 21,000 people in schools, health posts, and homes in four different municipalities of Huambo, Angola will benefit from the clean water produced from the filters.
